The US has historically been the most prominent country in the buyout sector, and for private equity as a whole, and so it is no surprise that eight of the 10 largest firms globally by buyout funds raised during the last 10 years are based in the US.
TPG is the largest firm by buyout funds raised during the last 10 years, with the Fort Worth, Texas-based firm raising $50.9 billion during this period. This is followed closely by New York-based KKR, which has raised $49.8 billion in buyout funds over the last 10 years, and Washington D.C-based The Carlyle Group with $43.8 billion garnered in buyout funds during this period.
We then see a further two US-based buyout powerhouses appear in the listings of the largest buyout firms globally, with the New York-based Blackstone Group raising $42.4 billion in buyout funds over the last 10 years, and Boston-based Advent International attracting $40.1 billion in buyout funds during this period.
With the top five largest firms by buyout funds raised all headquartered in the US, in sixth place we see the emergence of a European firm, with London-based CVC Capital Partners raising $34.1 billion in buyout funds in the last 10 years.
This is followed by three more US-based mega-sized buyout specialists, with New York-based Goldman Sachs raising $34.1 billion, Boston-based Bain Capital raising $31.6 billion, and New York-based Apollo Management having raising $30.6 billion, in buyout funds during the last 10 years.
The second European-based firm to appear in the listings of the 10 largest firms by buyout funds raised globally concludes our rankings, with London-based Apax Partners garnering $24.8 billion in buyout funds during the last 10 years.
The buyout sector has traditionally been associated with the US, and our listings of the 10 largest firms by buyout funds raised in the last 10 years re-enforces this, with eight firms based in the US and the remaining two firms based in London.
