Private equity investment consultants are often highly valuable resources for investors seeking exposure to the asset class, offering specialist advice and access to funds that might not otherwise be available. Of the more than 400 investment consultants listed on Preqin's Investor Intelligence database, 65% of provide advice on private equity investments. Of these firms 8% provide solely private equity-focused advice.

Typically private equity investment consultants offer both discretionary and non-discretionary services (62%). Only 7% provide discretionary-only investment consulting services and just under a third (31%) provide solely non-discretionary services.

The majority (67%) of investment consultants that are active in the private equity space are based in North America, while just over a quarter (26%) are based in Europe, and less than one tenth (7%) in Asia and Rest of World.

Of the private equity investment consultants tracked by Preqin, 38 were established in the last 6 years (since 2007). This is in contrast to the period 2000 to 2006, when 61 new private equity investment consulting firms were established.

With uncertain economic conditions continuing to prevail and consultants providing important insight into the private equity asset class, it will be interesting to see how the number of new investment consultants in the private equity space changes over coming years and how these new firms establish themselves in a market place with a number of large and long-established competitors.
