There are 47 private equity real estate firms headquartered in Illinois, making it the fourth-largest base of firms in the US. Illinois-based managers have raised an aggregate $30.4 billion for private equity real estate investments in the last 10 years. The most successful year in terms of fundraising was 2008, when 12 funds closed, receiving $6.9 billion in equity commitments. During the previous year 16 funds raised $5.0 billion. Fundraising declined in 2009, when seven funds reached a final close, raising an aggregate $3.8 billion.
Notable firms headquartered in Illinois include LaSalle Investment Management, which has raised $10.3 billion in the past 10 years. It manages a range of funds investing across North America, Europe and Asia, including the $3 billion LaSalle Asia Opportunity Fund III. Walton Street Capital has raised $5.1 billion in the last 10 years, including the $2 billion Walton Street Real Estate Fund VI, which closed in July 2009. Other significant Illinois-based firms include Transwestern Investment Company, which has raised an aggregate $3.0 billion, and Heitman, which has raised $2.8 billion.
