Preqin’s extensive research shows there are currently 182 private equity firms based in France. Collectively, these 182 fund managers have raised an aggregate €68.2bn in capital commitments in the last 10 years, and have an estimated €19.8bn available in dry powder. Many France-based fund managers are quite diverse in the types of investment strategies they pursue. Seventy-five firms focus on buyout investments either exclusively or part of a broader strategy, and sixty-five firms focus specifically on venture capital deals (including early stage, expansion/late stage and general venture capital).
The top five France-based fund managers, ranked in order by aggregate capital raised over the last decade, are AXA Private Equity, PAI Partners, Astorg Partners, LBO France, and Chequers Capital. In the past 10 years these five firms have raised an aggregate €32.6bn in capital, which amounts to 48% of the total capital raised by all 182 private equity firms based in France.
AXA Private Equity invests across Europe, North America, and Asia and engages in a range of investment strategies including buyout, secondaries, fund of funds, and infrastructure. In June 2012 the firm completed fundraising for AXA Secondary Fund V, raising a total of $7.1bn in capital commitments.
PAI Partners makes buyout investments across Europe, with a focus on five industries: food & consumer goods, retail & distribution, business services, healthcare, and general industrials. PAI Partners completed fundraising for its latest buyout fund, PAI Europe V, in 2008, raising a total of €2.8bn in capital commitments.
