Preqin’s extensive Fund Manager Profiles product reveals there are 101 France-based fund managers who have raised a private equity fund in the last 10 years. Collectively these firms have raised €57.1bn in the last decade and have an estimated €16.5bn in available dry powder. The most prominent strategy for these French-based fund managers is buyout with 57 firms making such investments either exclusively or part of a broader strategy, closely followed by 53 firms offering venture capital investments.
The top five France-based private equity firms are Axa Private Equity, Pai Partners, Astorg Partners, LBO France and Chequers Capital, by total funds raised over the last 10 years. Axa Private Equity has raised €13.8bn over the past decade which includes secondaries and fund of funds as well as for direct investment. The firm pursues the following strategies: funds of funds, buyout, growth, co-investment, infrastructure and mezzanine, and currently has €4.2bn in available dry powder.
PAI Partners manages or advises dedicated buyout funds as well as BNP Paribas’ portfolio of direct investments. Investments are typically made in European medium to large size public or private companies focusing on services, consumer goods & capital goods. PAI's investment teams are based in Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Copenhagen, Madrid and Milan. The firm has raised €6.0bn over the last decade and has €0.8bn in available dry powder.
The third largest French Private Equity firm is Astorg Partners with €2.4bn in capital raised over the last 10 years and approximately €1.0bn in dry powder available. It targets upper mid-market companies and focuses on build-up investments. It carries out a wide range of transactions including buyouts, rollouts, turnarounds, expansion capital and corporate partnerships.
