Five Largest Private Equity Fund Managers Based in MENA

Fund Manager Profiles is the most extensive, detailed source of information on private equity fund managers in the world.  Preqin’s research shows that there are currently 89 fund managers located in the MENA region that have raised private equity funds totalling over USD 18.7 billion in the last 10 years. In terms of total capital raised, the top five fund managers headquartered in MENA are Global Investment House, Citadel Capital, Abraaj Capital, Swicorp and EFG-Hermes Private Equity.

Global Investment House has raised USD 2.8 billion over the last decade and has invested in a broad spectrum of industries in the MENA region since its establishment in 1998. The firm tends to invest in early buyout and management buyout investments with special focus on the GCC member countries, Turkey, India and China.

Citadel Capital is an Egypt-based private equity firm listed on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) and which trades under the stock symbol CCAP.CA. The firm has raised USD 1.9 billion in the past decade for investment through a wide range of transaction types including distressed investments, industry roll-ups, growth capital investments, and leveraged investments.

Abraaj Capital has raised an estimated USD 1.5 billion since 2002. The firm acquires controlling or significant interests with board representation in stable, mature, well-managed businesses in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia and creates value through operational and financial improvements, management incentives and the use of leverage.

Swicorp and EFG-Hermes Private Equity are the final two fund managers comprising the top five private equity fund managers headquartered in the MENA region and have raised USD 1.3 billion and USD 1.2 respectively in the last 10 years.

Swicorp is a private equity group that provides intellectual and financial capital to domestic and international businesses active in the Middle East and North Africa. The firm invests in a wide range of transaction types including buyout, balanced, public to private and venture growth transactions in industries ranging from energy and petrochemicals to the consumer-related sectors.

EFG-Hermes Private Equity was established in 1999 as the wholly owned subsidiary of the Egyptian investment bank, EFG-Hermes. In early 2002, EFG-Hermes and Bullion Company Ltd came together to form one of the largest active private equity firms in Egypt: EFG-Hermes Private Equity.
 
The firm was formed with the aim of consolidating and streamlining operations of all private equity funds of the group under a single entity, sharing one vision and guided by common investment objectives.
