The majority are based in Germany and France – 20% based in each of these regions – while 16% are based in Switzerland and 16% in the UK. Ranked by private equity assets under management, the largest three firms are AlpInvest Partners, Partners Group and Pantheon.
AlpInvest invests worldwide across primary funds, secondaries funds and co-investment strategies, covering the entire private equity spectrum including mezzanine. It operates from offices in Amsterdam, Hong Kong, and New York and has around 125 staff in total, including over 60 investment professionals.
Partners Group manages private equity investment programs and mandates on behalf of over 450 institutional clients worldwide. It employs more than 500 people across fourteen offices in Zug, San Francisco, New York, São Paulo, London, Guernsey, Luxembourg, Munich, Dubai, Singapore, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo and Sydney. The firm's large network and global deal flow provide access to direct investments into equity and debt, private purchases of portfolios in the secondary market, and commitments to private equity funds.
Pantheon’s private equity offerings include regional primary fund programmes, secondaries, co-investment, and customised separate account programmes. Pantheon currently manages assets for a diverse range of institutional investors including pension funds, endowments, government bodies and insurance companies. Pantheon invests and serves clients on a global basis and has team of over 160 staff, including over 60 investment professionals.
