Preqin’s Fund Managers Profiles product shows that there are currently 724 firms located in the EU that make venture capital investments, either exclusively, or as part of a wider investment strategy. The most recent data collected by Preqin shows that 364 of these firms exclusively make venture capital investments, and have collectively raised more than EUR 17.1 billion over the past 10 years. These 364 firms currently have almost EUR 5 billion in estimated dry powder available to them for investment.

Of these EU-based firms exclusively pursuing venture capital investment strategies, the top five fund managers by total capital raised over the last 10 years are Balderton Capital, CDC Enterprises, Sanpaolo IMI Private Equity, Sunstone Capital, and HealthCap Venture Capital. These five firms alone have collected nearly 22% of the total capital raised over the past 10 years by the 364 firms.

Balderton Capital has raised the most capital over the past 10 years, at just over EUR 1 billion. The firm has an estimated dry powder of roughly EUR 340.3 million, and focuses its investments in a variety of locations worldwide, including Europe, North America, Asia and Russia, but only has a single office located in London. It makes its investments in a variety of sectors including clean technology, communications, computer and information services, consumer services, financial services, media, semiconductors, and software.

CDC Enterprises is headquartered in Paris, and makes its venture capital investments mostly in Europe, but is also willing to invest in North America. The firm has raised a total capital exceeding EUR 710 million over the last 10 years, and has an estimated dry powder of roughly EUR 56 million. It has no specific industry focus, but makes investments in sectors such as consumer services, life sciences, industrial, telecoms, and software and technology.

Unlike the two largest firms, the Italian firm Sanpaolo IMI Private Equity only makes European venture capital investments. It has a diversified industry focus, and has raised nearly EUR 710 million over the past 10 years. The firm currently has an estimated dry powder of EUR 168.7 million available for investment.
