Preqin’s Fund Manager Profiles database currently shows that there are 118 private equity firms headquartered in Eastern Europe and Russia. Collectively, these firms have raised approximately USD 15 billion through private equity funds over the last 10 years, and still have an estimated USD 5.7 billion available in dry powder. Approximately half of these firms have a predominant venture capital investment focus, with slightly less than half focusing mainly on buyout investments. The remainder have an alternative investment structure such as mezzanine or special situations.
In terms of geographical location, Russia has 32 private equity firms currently based in the country, which is the most out of all the Eastern European nations. This is followed by Poland, with 20 firms, and Turkey, Hungary and the Czech Republic also with a significant amount of firms. Currently, there is only one Lithuania-based firm, LitCapital. The fund manager is currently in the market with its LitCapital I fund, which is seeking to raise EUR 30 million for venture capital investments throughout Lithuania.
Preqin’s extensive research reveals that over the past 10-year period, the three firms with the largest total fundraising are Baring Vostok Capital Partners (BVCP), Enterprise Investors and Russia Partners.
BVCP is a buyout-focused firm located in Moscow. It is currently investing out if its latest closed fund, a 2007 vintage buyout fund that raised just over USD 1 billion.
Although the main investment strategy of Enterprise Investors is buyout, the Poland-based firm’s most recent fund is a technology-focused venture capital vehicle that raised EUR 100 million and closed towards the end of 2008.
Lastly, Russia Partners, with total funds raised amounting to USD 1.1 billion, focuses on growth investments throughout Russia and other select countries in Asia and Eastern Europe.
