Preqin’s research reveals that there are 1,605 private equity vehicles fundraising at present, targeting an aggregate USD 660 billion in capital commitments. In terms of the number of vehicles currently on the road, nearly half (47%) target the North American market, 28% focus on investments in Asia and Rest of World, while a quarter of the funds are seeking investment opportunities in Europe.
Venture capital funds account for the largest proportion of funds in the market. There are currently 449 venture funds on the road seeking USD 81 billion in capital commitments. In terms of the capital being sought, real estate funds dominate the market with USD 167 billion being targeted by 418 vehicles.
The average size of private equity funds on the road is USD 411.2 million. 160 funds are seeking commitments of USD 1 billion or above, accounting for 45% of the total target capital. The biggest fund currently in market is Blackstone Capital Partners VI, a buyout vehicle seeking USD 15 billion. It is followed by Madison Dearborn Capital Partners VI and Morgan Stanley Capital Partners V, targeting USD 7.5 billion and USD 6 billion in capital commitments respectively.
