Preqin’s research reveals that there are 1,552 private equity vehicles fundraising at present, targeting an aggregate USD 579 billion. 33% of these funds have already had at least one interim close having raised USD 97 billion.
In terms of the number of vehicles currently on the road, nearly half (45%) target the North American market, 31% focus mainly on investments in Asia and Rest of World, whilst the remaining 24% of the funds are seeking investment opportunities in Europe.
The most numerous funds on the road are venture capital funds. There are currently 468 venture funds on the road seeking USD 91 billion in capital commitments. In terms of the capital being sought, real estate funds dominate the market with over USD 139 billion being targeted by 427 vehicles.
The average size of private equity funds currently seeking capital is USD 406 million. 141 funds are targeting total commitments of USD 1 billion or above, accounting for 42% of the total target capital. The biggest fund currently in market is BC European Cap IX, a buyout vehicle seeking EUR 6 billion. It is followed by Morgan Stanley Capital Partners V, which is targeting USD 6 billion in capital commitments.
