Australasia-based Private Equity Firms

Preqin’s data reveals that there are currently 122 private equity firms located in Australasia. The latest data from the Fund Manager Profiles database shows that collectively, these firms have raised nearly USD25 billion in private equity capital over the last 10 years, and have over USD10.6 billion available in dry powder. There are 102 private equity firms based in Australia with the remaining 20 operating from New Zealand.

Preqin’s extensive research shows that the top five private equity firms in Australasia, ranked according to total funds raised in the last 10 years, are Pacific Equity Partners, CHAMP Private Equity, Industry Funds Management, Archer Capital and Quadrant Capital.

Sydney-based Pacific Equity Partners focuses on buyouts and late stage expansion capital in Australia and New Zealand. It does not invest in start-ups, unprofitable, gambling or tobacco-related businesses. The firm has raised nearly USD5 billion in private equity funds over the last 10 years and has an estimated USD2.5 billion in dry powder. Pacific Equity Partners Fund IV is the latest fund raised by the firm. It closed in March 2008 on AUD4 billion (USD3.7 billion).

CHAMP Private Equity, also based in Sydney, is a buyout funds manager with a history dating back to 1987. The firm provides capital for Australasian companies in a wide range of industries. It has raised nearly USD 2.2 billion in private equity funds over the last decade and is currently sitting on an estimated USD 1.2 billion in dry powder.  Its latest fund, CHAMP Buyout III, reached a final close in November 2010 on AUD1.48 billion (USD1.46 billion).

Headquartered in Melbourne, Industry Funds Management specialises in the management of investment products across private equity, infrastructure, debt and listed equities, with clients and teams located in three of the four largest pension markets in the world. The firm has raised nearly USD2 billion over the last 10 years and has over USD750 million in available capital. It closed its two latest funds in 2007, IFM Australian Private Equity Fund IV closed on AUD665 million (USD584 million) and IFM International Private Equity Fund III closed on USD545 million.
