Founded in Q2 of 1997, Lone Pine Capital (LPC) is an investment adviser that employs long/short and long-only strategies to invest in equities and equity-related securities based on bottom-up, fundamental analysis. LPC invests globally across a variety of industries. The firm is headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut, with research offices in San Francisco and New York. LPC aims for excellence in all aspects of their business, and seeks to promote a respectful, collaborative and innovative work environment. The firm’s core tenants include a culture of excellence and accountability which is underpinned by broad employee ownership, compensation from a single pool and emphasis on collaboration, diversity and inclusion. Additionally, the team strongly believes that integrating relevant environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into the research process may be useful when evaluating investment risks. LPC’s investment approach is based on bottom-up, fundamental stock picking, long and short for the hedge funds. The long-only funds have the same investment approach; however, they do not employ leverage and there are no short positions. Each position stands on its own based on their assessment of a significant discrepancy between current market value and intrinsic business value. LPC tries to find and own what they believe to be the best stocks and, in the hedge funds, sell short what they believe to be the worst stocks. LPC’s analytical work is conducted “in the trenches,” meeting many levels of management, talking to competition, going to industry conferences and trade shows, and checking with suppliers and customers. LPC’s longs typically come in three flavors: growth companies, where capital can be reinvested in the business at a high rate of return for a long period of time (LPC likes these investments the best because they do not need to be replaced very often), highly cash-generative businesses with only modest growth opportunities where management is aggressively using the cash for the benefit of shareholders, and previously undermanaged solid businesses where top-flight management has just taken the helm. LPC believes all of these investments have three things in common, however: managements that they respect, trust, and want to be partners with, businesses that have competitive “moats” around them, and reasonable valuations.
