The Challenge: Bridging the gap between theory and practice to promote sustainable capital market development

ICMR expanded its research beyond public securities to alternative markets with a view to creating a centre of research excellence that will support the growth of Malaysia’s capital market.

However, lack of consistency and less strenuous reporting requirements in alternative markets generated challenges for the independent think tank when collating and verifying private market data.

To provide focused, pragmatic, and evidence-based research studies to the various industry stakeholders of the Malaysian financial industry, ICMR first used various sources including regulatory websites, government agencies, and multiple commercial databases as proxies in its research process.

However, this proved to be a drain on operational resources (not to mention a tedious process). Therefore, the team decided to streamline its research by finding one reliable and comprehensive source.

The Requirements: A single, verifiable source of data and insights to produce research reports focused on private markets

As ICMR set course on exploring the development of the alternative assets industry both regionally and globally, it sought a solution that would provide transparent insights on the evolution of private markets to:

  1. Raise awareness of the market trends and developments within the alternatives industry
  2. Support all relevant stakeholders with information on market regulations and policies
  3. Extend stakeholders’ participation in private markets

Crucially, to bridge the gap between theory and practice in Asia-Pacific, ICMR needed to find a reliable and comprehensive data provider with extensive coverage of the fragmented markets within the region.

The Solution: A global private markets data provider with strong coverage of Asia-Pacific

With Preqin, ICMR gained access to a global coverage of private markets supported by more than 330 researchers located in key financial centres worldwide.

Preqin has on-the-ground presence in APAC, with offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Manila, Tokyo, and Sydney. This provides ICMR with access to localized customer service and research support that delivers a unique and transparent view across all alternative asset classes.

Through Preqin, ICMR can access APAC-specific data on:

  • 1,700+ investors
  • 5,900+ fund managers
  • 11,100+ private capital funds
  • 75,100+ deals and exits
This data seeds the think tank’s market research, allowing ICMR to measure and analyze the size of investor commitments, asset class AUMs, deals and exits volumes, various fund structures, regulatory impacts, and more.

With granular searches and filters the team can go even further, drilling down into raw data to find key statistics in each individual market, all from verified sources.

Beyond the raw data, ICMR can rely on Preqin Pro’s advanced performance analytics and generate ready-to-use reports. Supported by more than 17,000 APAC-focused market benchmarks, its Research team can start to get to grips with the true drivers of performance.

Preqin also caters to ICMR’s need for market trend information through reports on specific regions and asset classes, such as its Markets in Focus series, with editions covering Southeast Asia and Greater China, as well as expert views on global trends through the Preqin 2020 Global Reports and Quarterly Updates on Preqin Insights.

The Results: Research supporting Malaysia’s key private market stakeholders and policy makers

The rapid development of the alternative assets industry has permeated nearly every facet of Malaysia’s private markets. With Preqin, ICMR is able to keep up and track developments across the entire industry in a systematic manner.

As a result, ICMR managed to publish two research documents1 on Malaysia’s private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) market in 2019. These proprietary documents were shared with key stakeholders such as the Securities Commission of Malaysia, the Malaysian VC & PE Development Council, and the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment, and Climate Change.

Backed by Preqin’s data and actionable insights, these asset class-focused reports are key tools for ICMR as it facilitates the acceleration of Malaysia’s capital market growth.

1The research report Catalyzing the Growth of the Venture Capital Industry: Malaysia’s Perspective is proprietary to the Securities Commission of Malaysia and an abstract of the report is available here. The second research document produced is Malaysian VC Ecosystem: Facilitating the expansion of the venture debt industry and the full-length document is available here.
We chose Preqin because of their data coverage of the Asia- Pacific region compared to other data providers.
