About

Based in San Francisco, California, and founded in 2009 by Mark Gainey and Michael Horvath, Strava is a social fitness network application. Strava’s initial go to market strategy was to focus on the cycling community, however, it has since expanded its exercise tracking service across a range of sports. The platform now has over 64 million users across 244 countries and has 40 million uploads every week. Prior to Strava both Michael and mark co-founded Kana, a cloud computing and customer relationship software company.

In May 2025, Strava, Inc. raised an undisclosed amount of venture funding led by returning investor Sequoia Capital, with participation from other returning investors TCV, Jackson Square Ventures, and Go4It Investments. Other unspecified investors also participated in the round. Through a GPS enabled device such as a mobile phone Strava records supported sports activities which can be shared among a user's followers or shared publicly through its online platform.

Strava records a range of metrics such as distance, speed, and heart rate so users can monitor their overall performance during a sporting activity and progress over time. Strava is designed with both professional and non-professional athletes in mind. Strava operates freemium model or a monthly or yearly subscription service, with a slight discount applied when purchased as a yearly subscription. While the free version of the app still allows a user to record and share an activity, the subscription service provides additional features such as progress charting, leader boards, and more enhanced granularity around performance metrics.

Strava has also entered paid partnerships with sporting brands such as sports clothing company Salomon and other sports applications such as Zwift. The company will use the May 2025 funding to support international expansion, pursue strategic acquisitions, and enhance its technology platform.
